Facts About gorillas: Before people choose to come to you Uganda to track Gorillas they always want to find out about these highly sought after mammals. Here we look at some of the things you would want to know about the Endangered Mountain Gorillas.

  1. There are about 900 of them left in the world with half of that population found in Uganda and the rest shared between Rwanda and DRC.
  2. They have 98% DNA match to humans
  3. Gorillas are the largest primates on earth. They weigh about 400 pounds for males and half of that on average for females.
  4. They have human emotions and can laugh when tickled and cry when hurt.
  5. They eat about 50 pounds a day for males
  6. They don’t usually drink water as they get the water they need through plants.
  7. They use vines’ branches and leaves to form baby beds
  8. A baby gorilla weighs about 4.5 pounds.
  9. They stay in groups of up to 20 members and live in these groups for years.
  10. They usually walk on four limbs and only use only their feet for a short while.
  11. They don’t have tails.
  12. They are very intelligent and those that have been habituated have been taught sign language to communicate with humans.
  13. They build a sleeping nest every evening and occasionally one for the midday nap.
  14. When a male matures its back hair turns silver hence being called “silver back”.
  15. They live up to 53 years.
  16. Female gorillas reach a breeding stage after 10 years.
  17. Females normally give birth every after 4-5 years with a gestation period of 8-9 months
