Pelicans in Uganda
Pelicans in Uganda are really large water birds with a distinctive pouch under the beak. As with other members of the order Pelecaniformes, they have webbed feet with four toes. There are 8 species worldwide and 2 species which occur in Uganda.
Pink-backed Pelican (Pelecanus rufescens)
Great White Pelican (Pelecanus onocrotalus)
In Uganda the Great white pelican (Pelecanus onocrotalus) and the Pink-backed pelican (Pelecanus rufescens) are seen along the Kazinga Channel in Queen Elizabeth National Park.
The juvenile birds are much darker and browner. (A juvenile pelican one with the first full- feathered plumage)
The adult birds show extensive black flight feathers contrasting with the white greater and median coverts.
