You will explore Kenya Lake System in the great rift valley which is a natural property of exceptional splendor, comprising of three inter-linked fairly shallow lakes of Lake Bogoria, 10,700 hectares, Lake Nakuru 18,800 hectares, and Lake Elementaita 2,534 hectares.

Day 1: Bird Nairobi National Park

Meet and greet your birding guide for briefing and later set off for Nairobi National Park for bird watching. The park is among the oldest reserve located only 10km from the Capital City with more than 500 bird species. On this day, you will encounter a number of animals including the Lion, Leopard, Rhino and Buffalo. Besides wildlife, look out for birds in Nairobi national park like; White-faced Whistling Duck, Masaai Ostrich, Helmeted Guineafowl, Levaillant’s Cuckoo, Coqui Francolin, Harlequin Quail, Spur-winged Goose, Pygmy Falcon, Lanner Falcon, Long-crested Eagle, White-backed Vulture, Ruppell’s Vulture, African Green Pigeon, Egyptian Vulture, White-bellied Bustard, Lappet-faced Vulture, Bateleur, Spotted Eagle Owl, Tawny Eagle, Martial Eagle, Crowned Eagle, Kori Bustard, Black-bellied bustard, Hartlaub’s Bustard, African Finfoot, Yellow-throated Sandgrouse, Namaqua Dove, Hartlaub’s Turaco, Jacobin Cuckoo, Great Painted Snipe among others. Retire and drive to your booked accommodation for dinner and overnight stay.

Day 2: Bird watching in Manguo Swamp / Gatamaiyu Forest

After taking your breakfast, drive to Manguo Swamp for an exciting birding experience. Manguo swamp is located along Nairobi-Naivasha Road, only 40 minutes from Nairobi city. The wetland is a home to freshwater birds including the localized duck and Maccoa Duck. Maccoa ducks have been listed as ‘near threatened’ by I.U.C.N in recent years.

On the other hand, Gatamaiyu Forest forms part of the larger Kereita which is an extension of the southern-most end indigenous forest of the Aberdares ranges. Gatamaiyu Forest is a true paradise and an ideal urban birding & hiking destination to spot Afro-tropical highland bird species.

Today you will look out for the following bird species in Gatamaiyu Forest; Hunter’s Cisticola, Chestnut-throated Apalis, White-bellied Tit, Rufous-breasted Sparrowhawk, Silvery cheeked Hornbill, Fine-banded Woodpecker, Tambourine Dove, Hartlaub’s Turaco, Abbott’s Starling among others. You may also spot some primates like Colobus and Sykes’s Monkeys. Dinner and overnight at your booked lodge.

Day 3: Bird Lake Elementeita

Have breakfast and head to Lake Elementeita which is also spelled as Lake Elementaita / Lake Elmenteita for a birding safari. The word Elementeita is derived from the Maasai word muteita which means “dust place”.

The lake is also recognized as an Important Bird Area and a home to both Greater and Lesser Flamingo. Over 4 million Lesser Flamingos travel between the three lakes of; Elementeita, Nakuru, and Bogoria. The lake also hosts significant populations of over 100 species of Palearctic migratory birds. The following are bird species that can be spotted in Lake Elementeita; Grey-headed Bushshrike, Peregrine Falcon, Sulphur-breasted Bushshrike, Brown-crowned Tchagra, White-crested Helmetshrike, African Hobby, Grey-crested Helmetshrike, Lesser Kestrel, Sooty Falcon, Common Kestrel, Greater Kestrel, Grey Kestrel, Red-footed Falcon, Amur Falcon, Eleonora’s Falcon, Eurasian Hobby, Lanner Falcon, Saker Falco, Red-throated Wryneck, Green-backed Honeybird, Red-fronted Tinkerbird, Green Wood-Hoopoe, African Scops Owl, Verreaux’s Eagle Owl, Levant Sparrowhawk, Greater Spotted Eagle, African Marsh Harrier, Lammergeier, African Cuckoo Hawk, Western Osprey, Goliath Heron, Squacco Heron, Black-crowned Night Heron, Gull-billed Tern, Temminck’s Stint, Horus Swift, Three-banded Plover, Black-tailed Godwit among others. Dinner and overnight at your booked lodge.

Day 4 & 5: Birding safari at Lake Baringo

After breakfast, drive to Lake Baringo for bird watching adventure. The lake more than 470 rare bird species. Lake Baringo has 7 islands, namely Samatian, Rongena, Olkokwa, Lengai, Lokoros, Parmolos and the Devil’s Island; Olkokwe being the largest.

Following are some of the bird species that can be spotted in Lake Baringo; Great Spotted Cuckoo, Goliath Heron, Pearl-spotted Owlet, Dwarf Bittern, Little Bittern, White-backed Night-heron, Abdim’s Stork, Heuglin’s Courser, Senegal Thick-knee, Pale Prinia, Allen’s Gallinule, Slender-tailed Nightjar, Pennant-winged Nightjar, Star-spotted Nightjar, Osprey, African Scops Owl, Shining Sunbird, Somali Sparrow, Greyish Eagle Owl, Somali Tit, Verreaux’s Eagle Owl, Blue-naped Mousebird, Greater Honeyguide, Red–and–Yellow Barbet, Madagascar Bee-eater, Northern White-faced (Scops) Owl, Abyssinian Roller, Pygmy Batis, White-crested Helmetshrike, Somali Fiscal, White-necked Raven, Pygmy Sunbird, White-billed Buffalo Weaver, Northern Red Bishop, Northern Carmine Bee-eater, Northern Masked Weaver, White-crested Turaco, African Pygmy Kingfisher among others. Dinner and overnight at your booked lodge.

Day 6: Transfer from Lake Baringo to Nairobi

Wake up and have a leisurely breakfast, relax and set off for Nairobi to end your 6 Days Kenya Birding safari.  Depending on your flight details, you may visit the giraffe center before departing.
