Rwanda Gorilla Trekking Safaris
Mountain gorilla trekking safaris are done from Volcanoes national park in Rwanda. The park has a total 12 habituated gorilla groups ready for tourism and tracking activities.
Gorilla tracking in Rwanda starts with a briefing from the ranger guides at the park headquarters about the dos and don’ts during mountain gorilla safaris; after you will be allocated to different families to track and later head to Volcanoes national park under the guidance of a professional ranger for the life time experience.
Some families live near the briefing area and other groups require some kind of driving before the start of the trail; therefore, tracking time takes between 2 to 8hours depending on the movement of the family. Regardless of the gorilla family allocated to you, you be able to see the gorillas; often found while enjoying their breakfast and the infants playing with their family members.
The following are the gorilla families in Volcanoes national park that can be allocated to you during gorilla trekking safaris in Rwanda; Susa, Igisha, Hirwa, Karisimbi, Umubano, Sabyinyo, Amahoro, Agashya, Bwenge, Kwitonda, Ugyenda and Muhoza. Every family consists of at least one silverback alongside several females and youngsters.
The cost of gorilla trekking permit in Rwanda is US $1500 per person per trek and the minimum age limit to track gorillas is 15 years old. Special offers are available for East African residents.
The best time to visit Volcanoes national park Rwanda is from mid-May to mid-October, this is the long dry season and has perfect conditions for gorilla tracking safaris.
You are required to pack solid walking shoes with gaiters and sturdy clothing to protect against stinging nettles. Gardening or leather gloves are also important to carry and also don’t forget to pack lightweight waterproof jacket just in case it rains.
