What makes Rushaga the best section for gorilla safaris in Bwindi National Park?  Bwindi Impenetrable National Park is one of the best National Parks located in Southwestern Park of Uganda particularly in Kisoro district. The sector is among the four sectors in Bwindi that is gifted with the very number of habituated gorilla families compared to other sectors.

The sector is mainly covered with hills and this has provided the mountain gorillas a chance to climb these hills in divisions or subgroups which gives tourists a clear view of these species. Importantly, due to the increased number of habituated families, the sector provides about 40 gorilla permits per day available to be booked by clients for trekking.  Thus, travelers can rarely miss an opportunity to trek gorillas because of this increased number of permits.

Remember Bwindi Impenetrable Forest National harbors more than half of the total Gorillas which are more than half of the endangered mountain gorillas left in the world, Rushaga sector has the highest number of gorillas that are more than four gorilla groups compared to other sectors with 3 or less. The Prominent gorilla families that can trek in the Rushaga sector include the Nshongi gorilla group, Busingye (peace in local language) gorilla group, Kungye gorilla group, Bweza gorilla family and Mishaya gorilla group.

In this sector, Gorilla safaris / trekking is done by a maximum of 8 persons per day and only one hour is spent per visit. This is done as a conservation strategy and as a way to enforce ecotourism principles. Further, travelers to Rushaga can be accessible through Kigali international Airport and Chanika Uganda Rwanda border. The increase of gorilla permit prices in Rwanda increased to travelers in Rushaga Bwindi and this provides the greatest opportunity to trek gorilla in Uganda via Rwanda at a cheaper cost of $600 compared to Rwanda’s $1500 for a trekking permit.

Gorilla habituation also takes place in Rushaga with four families of gorilla habituated. This habituation was done to make gorillas get accustomed to travelers and thus in this instance gorilla are being trained to friendly to humans and specifically for this activity particularly visitors are charged $1500 for the activity and spend 4 hours with the gorilla compared to only one hour spend during trekking.

In this habituation, each gorilla family is visited by a group of four travelers for four hours of interaction. Unlike in gorilla trekking where eight people are allowed to interact with a gorilla family, only a group of four people are allowed to interact with a family undergoing habituation as the result of ensuring carrying capacity principles

Apart from other gorilla trekking and habituation, other pleasing activities in Rushaga Sector include; Cultural activities, where you can tour the Batwa in Kisoro areas who lived in the area for over 200 years and once stayed in the forest with the animals hence making it the best section for gorilla safaris. These pygmies will amuse the visitors with dance and songs as well as revealing their way of living. Visit the craft shop and the beer, juice and gin-making company using bananas.
