Mulago Hill: Mulago hospital is Located north of the central business district and approximately 5.5k outside of the central business centre the hill overlooks Makerere. It rises 4134 feet (1260m) above sea level. It is one of the 7 original hills on which Kampala was built and like all the other seven hills it bears a landmark that is important in the livelihood of the Ugandans. Hill lends its name to the surrounding suburbs and is located in Kawempe division of Kampala district.

The Mulago originates from a traditional local medicinal herb that is grown on this hill. The grass was used by Kabaka Sunna to protect himself from the evil spirits. It is on this hill also that Kabaka Sunna ll set up his administration capital during his reign between 1832-1856 commonly known as the reign of terror.

The hill bears the National referral hospital for Uganda which is no exception from the name Mulago. The hill also has the Makerere university medical school, the oldest medical college in the country. The hill is mainly dominated by hospital related facilities like the doctor’s village, Research laboratories, nursing school, city mortuary, pharmacies, nurses’ hostels and other departments of the Makerere medical school. This hospital was built in 1917 with its first complex at old Mulago by Sir Albert Ruskin Cook, the old Mulago later transitioned into the new Mulago in 1960 with a giant complex with bigger and better facilities and services for a national referral hospital. The Katikiro of Buganda Nsibirwa gave his private land for the expansion of the hospital and building the nurses hostels.

Being the National referral hospital, thousands of people come here every day from various parts of the country for medical service. Today the hospital is under reconstruction to enable them handle more people and improved services. The hospital offers a number of services like obstetrics and gynecology, pedestrian and child health, surgical services including kidney and heart surgeries, diagnostic, private patient services, and medical services. Various researches are carried out here to ensure better service delivery and healthy lives.

Within a few kilometers reach is the Uganda national museum, the Uganda wildlife Authority head offices and the offices of the British high commission, the high commission of the republic of Rwanda and the vibrant and colorful Kamwokya Market along with a few residential areas.
